How do you stop synth pads from swallowing the whole mix?
Pads can make a track feel bigger, but they also take up a lot of space quickly. I have had mixes where the pad sounded beautiful soloed but made the vocal, guitars, and snare feel less clear.
What are your go-to ways of keeping pads useful? Filtering, sidechain movement, fewer notes, narrower voicings, automation, or simply turning them down more than feels natural?
