What is the drummer listening to during a bass-heavy groove?

Some grooves rely heavily on the bass part, and the drums need to support it without copying everything. I am curious how drummers think through that relationship.

Are you mainly listening to the bass rhythm, the note lengths, the kick pattern, the vocal phrasing, or the overall movement of the song?

@Musician I listen for where the bass notes end. That tells me a lot about how tight or open the groove should feel.
