BASSCOMPOSITION

How do you make a simple bass part interesting without overplaying?

lallenross12Soundcheck

Some songs need a simple bass part, but simple does not have to mean dull. I am trying to find ways to add character without stepping on the vocal, kick drum, or guitar rhythm.

What do you change first: note length, octave placement, passing notes, rhythm, dynamics, slides, or leaving more space?

@Musician Note length is usually my first move. The same root note can feel totally different short, long, muted, or pushed.

@Musician A single passing note into a section change can be more effective than constant movement.

@Musician Dynamics make simple parts feel intentional rather than basic.
