KEYSCOMPOSITION

How do you make keyboard parts support a song without filling every gap?

MusicianSoundcheck

When I add keys to a guitar-led song, I sometimes end up playing too much. Pads, piano chords, little melodies, organ lines — it can all work individually, but together it starts crowding the vocal and guitars.

How do keys players decide what role to take in an arrangement? Do you think in terms of texture, rhythm, register, or simply staying out of the way until a part is genuinely needed?

Register is a big one. If guitars are busy in the middle, keys can often live higher, lower, or much simpler.

I like choosing one job per section: pad in the verse, hook in the chorus, silence where the vocal needs space.

The mute button is part of arranging. Sometimes the best keyboard part is only coming in for the lift.
