How do you make barre chord changes feel less like a hand workout?

MusicianSoundcheck

I can get through open chords fairly comfortably, but the moment a song has repeated barre chord changes my fretting hand starts to tense up. It is especially noticeable when moving between F, Bm, and C#m shapes in quicker songs.

I am trying to work out whether the answer is lighter pressure, a better thumb position, slower repetition, or just more time spent building strength. What practice routines helped you make barre chords feel more musical and less like a gym session for your hand?

The biggest change for me was learning to use just enough pressure to stop the buzz. I used to clamp every barre chord as if the guitar was trying to escape.

Try practising the movement without strumming first. Move between the shapes slowly and only add the right hand once the left hand feels relaxed.

A quick setup check is worth it too. High action can make barre chords feel much harder than they need to be.
