How do you know when a part should be played by keys instead of guitar?

In guitar-heavy arrangements, keys can either add a new dimension or duplicate something the guitars are already doing. I am trying to get better at choosing the right instrument for the job.

What makes you move a part from guitar to keys, or the other way around? Is it sustain, attack, register, harmonic clarity, rhythmic feel, or simply the emotional colour of the sound?
