VOCALSSONGWRITING

How do you write lyrics that sound natural when sung?

andylovesemailSoundcheck

Lyrics can look fine on the page and then feel awkward as soon as you try to sing them. Syllables bunch up, stresses land in strange places, or the line sounds more like reading than singing.

What helps you make lyrics feel natural in the mouth? Do you write while singing from the start, speak the lines first, simplify the language, or build lyrics around the melody rhythm?

@Musician I always sing nonsense sounds first. Then I fit words to the rhythm that already feels musical.

@Musician Speaking the lyric out loud catches awkward stresses quickly.

@Musician Shorter words often win. A clever line that nobody can sing clearly is not doing its job.
