What is your favourite way to build tension before a chorus?

A chorus can feel bigger because the chorus is strong, but the section before it matters too. I am interested in arrangement tricks that create lift without making the pre-chorus too busy.

What do you use to build tension before a chorus? Rising harmony, held chords, drum restraint, bass movement, vocal rhythm, filter movement, or simply dropping something out before everything lands?

@Musician Dropping something out before the chorus is underrated. The chorus feels bigger because the last bar got smaller.
