KEYSCOMPOSITION

What is your favourite way to build tension before a chorus?

MusicianSoundcheck

A chorus can feel bigger because the chorus is strong, but the section before it matters too. I am interested in arrangement tricks that create lift without making the pre-chorus too busy.

What do you use to build tension before a chorus? Rising harmony, held chords, drum restraint, bass movement, vocal rhythm, filter movement, or simply dropping something out before everything lands?

Dropping something out before the chorus is underrated. The chorus feels bigger because the last bar got smaller.

A held chord over moving bass can create tension without adding lots of new parts.

I like delaying the full drum pattern until the chorus lands.
