GUITARSONGWRITING

What is your simplest songwriting trick when you are completely stuck?

MusicianSoundcheck

Some days I can come up with riffs or chord loops easily, but turning them into a full song is another matter. I often get stuck after a verse idea or a chorus hook and end up playing the same loop for half an hour.

What is the simplest thing you do to get unstuck? Change the rhythm, write a rough lyric, transpose the idea, record a voice note, start with the chorus, or walk away for a bit?

I record the rough idea and immediately hum a bad melody over it. The first version is usually terrible, but it gives me something to react to.

Changing the drum feel helps me. The same chords over a different rhythm can suddenly suggest a chorus or middle eight.

I give myself permission to write the boring connecting section. You can improve a dull bridge later, but you cannot edit nothing.
