GUITARCOMPOSITION

How much theory is enough for a working guitarist?

MusicianSoundcheck

Theory can be incredibly useful, but it is easy to get overwhelmed by modes, chord substitutions, extensions, borrowed chords, and all the rest. I am trying to separate useful working knowledge from rabbit holes.

For guitarists writing, recording, or playing in bands, what theory made the biggest practical difference? Chord construction, key centres, Nashville numbers, intervals, rhythm, or something else?

Intervals helped me more than scale names. Knowing what a sound is lets you find it anywhere.

Nashville numbers are practical because you can talk to other musicians quickly.

Basic chord construction goes a long way. It helps you alter chords without guessing.
