BASSPERFORMANCE

What makes a bassline lock in with the drummer instead of fighting them?

MusicianSoundcheck

I have been listening back to rehearsal recordings and noticed that some bass parts feel glued to the drums, while others sound like they are sitting on top of the groove rather than inside it. The notes are technically correct, but the feel is not always there.

For bass players and drummers, what do you listen for when trying to lock in? Is it mainly kick drum placement, note length, muting, dynamics, or leaving more space than you think you need?

For me it starts with the kick pattern, but the note endings matter just as much as the note starts.

Muting is huge. A slightly shorter note can make the whole groove feel tighter without changing the part.

I like recording just drums and bass together. It makes it very obvious where the pocket is drifting.
