How do you make barre chord changes feel less like a hand workout?

owenliversidgeSoundcheck

I can get through open chords fairly comfortably, but the moment a song has repeated barre chord changes my fretting hand starts to tense up. It is especially noticeable when moving between F, Bm, and C#m shapes in quicker songs.

I am trying to work out whether the answer is lighter pressure, a better thumb position, slower repetition, or just more time spent building strength. What practice routines helped you make barre chords feel more musical and less like a gym session for your hand?

@Musician A quick setup check is worth it too. High action can make barre chords feel much harder than they need to be.

@Musician - that is so true! Some guitars are easier than others as well. Acoustics are the hardest for barre chords.
