Choosing a first compact mixer for a rehearsing or gigging band

Channel count is only the beginning when choosing a compact mixer. A band should count microphones, stereo keyboards, playback, spare inputs and monitor mixes—not just current members. Preamps, usable EQ, effects, routing and physical control layout matter more than a long feature list that is difficult to operate in a dark venue.

Analogue mixers are immediate and easy to understand, while digital models can provide more monitor mixes, recall and processing in a smaller footprint. The trade-off is dependence on menus, tablets or a more complex setup. For pub work, robust sockets and quick fault-finding have real value.

Enough independent auxiliary sends became essential as soon as people wanted different monitor mixes. It is easy to overlook because the main input count is more visible in specifications.

A sweepable mid EQ is far more useful than a basic fixed mid control when dealing with difficult rooms. It lets you remove the specific boxy or harsh area instead of broadly changing the whole sound.

I would put monitor outputs near the top of the list. A mixer can have enough input channels and still become frustrating the moment two people want different monitor balances. Even for a small pub band, two genuinely independent aux mixes can be more useful than another bank of effects.

Physical controls matter too, especially when somebody has to make a quick change during a set. A compact digital mixer may offer far more routing, but a straightforward desk with clearly labelled gain, monitor and effect controls can be easier when the person operating it is also performing.
