Choosing a first compact mixer for a rehearsing or gigging band
Channel count is only the beginning when choosing a compact mixer. A band should count microphones, stereo keyboards, playback, spare inputs and monitor mixes—not just current members. Preamps, usable EQ, effects, routing and physical control layout matter more than a long feature list that is difficult to operate in a dark venue.
Analogue mixers are immediate and easy to understand, while digital models can provide more monitor mixes, recall and processing in a smaller footprint. The trade-off is dependence on menus, tablets or a more complex setup. For pub work, robust sockets and quick fault-finding have real value.
Which features proved essential after you started gigging, and which ones looked important in the shop but rarely got used?
